Saturday night Danielle and I broke our routine. As I am normally an early riser, we tend to head to bed by 10:00pm or so. We broke that routine. We finally made it to bed around 1:00am after a long night of planning.
As most all of you know, Danielle and I will be going debt free by this summer. (Un)fortunately, we are ready to start demo on parts of our house. We have a lot of projects planned including a new kitchen, updating the bathrooms, adding a couple walls, adding a fire place, and tiling around 1600 sq. ft. (We will be professionals in no time.) As it doesn’t make sense to start paying for these projects until we have the rest of our debts paid off, we have entered the 6-month planning phase. You all heard me, 6 month planning phase. When we are ready to start I can guarantee I will have everything loaded into our online shopping carts, after finding the best deals, with around ~$4,500 in discounted gift cards at the ready.
With 6 months to go, most people would take their time in drawing everything out and making shopping lists. We are not most people. We have a detailed list entailing every component for each job broken down by cost and the cheapest store for each item. After 6 hours of this we started to go a little cross-eyed, but we got it done.
We have 6 months to tweak and refine these plans. I’m sure we’re going to have a few date nights at Home Depot and other local builders to put together quotes, but it is something we’ve found that we enjoy doing. I’d say give it another 3 months and we will start posting some of our sample plans, shopping lists, and maybe some drawings.
I’m still in a little bit of sticker shock, but total renovations are still sub $50,000. For now.
