This past year Danielle and I have been persistent at paying down all of our debts so that we can move on and start making all of the home improvements we would like to and take a few guilt free trips.
We sat down this past week and tallied up all of the debts we have paid this year (car, house, and loans) and we came to a rather shocking realization. We paid more this year towards our debts than Danielle (the top breadwinner this year) made in a year, and built up an emergency fund.
We spent this year trying to live off of Danielle’s salary and applying my salary to all of our debts. It turns out we were living off my salary and applying her salary and more to our debt. Big deal, however, it has put us in the spot where we needed to be. As the new year rolls around and I’m still looking for work come January, we have been able to migrate our budget for the new year to Danielle’s salary with no changes to our budget, minus aggressive debt payoff, because we have been so persistent. It might not be a glamorous budget or lifestyle but we never have to worry about overdrafts or not making ends meets at the end of the month. Something many other people aren’t as fortunate to experience.
We have a lot of new years resolutions revolving around our budget and where we hope to be in a year from now, but I have never been so happy to say we spent more than we make, well more than Danielle made.
